Home Based Business Ideas

Home based business ideas are a dime a dozen, but unless you put them into action, they are worthless. So, instead of starting by throwing a lot of useless ideas at you, we’re going to start by helping you to find the best ideas for you. Yes, we’ll list some home based business ideas in this article, and in another article we list the 10 Best Home Based Businesses, but first, let’s make them useful for you.

Important Side Comment

Before we start, I need to make an important comment. There are more than a few of you looking through this site that feel unconfortable or even downright scared about the idea of "starting a business." A few of you see "home based business ideas" and you start to shake. I understand. They just don't teach this kind of thing in school.

Look. You don't have to think about starting a business. Instead, think about finding a fun activity that you can do a few hours a day to make a few bucks. For example, I knew a woman who taught people how to cook Chinese food in her own kitchen. How's that sound to you? "Hey Jane, I'm thinking of teaching a Chinese cooking class in my home on Tuesday afternoons. Would you be interested? I'll need to charge $20 a session to cover supplies and my time."

There. That sounds better than some home based business ideas. It's just a friendly activity you do for fun - and a few dollars.

Now you’ll need to answer for yourself the questions below. Your answers will do more for you than a hundred lists. It’s just like looking for a new shirt. You can see five hundred of them on a rack, but unless a shirt looks right and feels right and fits right it isn’t for you.

Starting a new home business is almost like buying that new shirt. Home based business ideas that don't fit are not useful. There’s no sense starting a new business for yourself and finding out a year down the line that you hate your business. Let’s do it right the first time. Don't worry, though. You can always change your business if neccessary. Many people change businesses many times until they get it right.

Answer these questions for yourself:

  • Am I prepared to spend the time, money and resources needed to get my home based business started?
  • What kind of business do I want?
  • Do I want to work full-time or part-time?
  • What do I like to do?
  • What skills or knowledge do I have?
  • What tools or equipment or software do I own?
  • What would I like to learn?
  • How much money do I want to make from this business?
  • What products/services will my business provide?
  • Why am I starting a business?
  • What is my target market?
  • Who is my competition?

What is unique about my business idea and the products/services I will provide?

Have I ever owned or worked for a small business before?

Can I handle the emotional ups and downs of starting my own small business?

These are just a few of the questions you need to answer for yourself. If you are not satisfied that you are really prepared, then you need to do a bit more research. That’s why we are here.
